A Spotlight on Simone!
With a rich history as an international player and a strategic leader, Simone (current Trustee, former Chair and long-time supporter of the sport) shares what drives her involvement and vision for the Foundation.
Why did you join the Foundation Board?
I joined the Foundation Board in 2019 because I wanted to give back to the sport that has given me so much. Volleyball has played a huge role in my life—as a player, teammate, and leader—and I’m passionate about helping others access the same opportunities. The Foundation’s mission to create an inclusive and welcoming volleyball community really resonated with me.
What is your background in Volleyball?
I represented the New Zealand Senior Women’s National Team between 1997 and 2007, competing internationally over a span of a decade. I also had the opportunity to compete collegiately in the United States as a middle blocker at Liberty University in Virginia. My journey started in Auckland and took me around the world, giving me a deep appreciation for how sport can shape lives.
What do you want the Foundation to achieve?
I’d love to see the Foundation continue to grow its impact—breaking down barriers to access and making sure anyone who wants to play can. Whether it's through grants, community programs, or outreach, we have the potential to open doors for more people, especially those who may not have traditionally seen volleyball as accessible to them.
How will you be helping the Foundation to do this?
After serving as Chair until 2023, I now continue to support as a Trustee, focusing on strategy, governance, and inclusion. I’m also actively involved in the Heritage Project, helping preserve and share the rich history of volleyball in England. My goal is to ensure the Foundation remains both forward-thinking and rooted in the values that make our sport so special.
What can others do to support the Foundation and our Volleyball Family?
There are so many ways to get involved. Volunteering, donating, mentoring, or simply amplifying our work can make a real difference. If you’ve benefited from volleyball in your own life, think about how you can help pass that on. We’re building a stronger, more inclusive volleyball family together—and everyone has a role to play.
